This internship is open only to people currently serving in the United States military who are eligible for SkillBridge and are transitioning out of the service. It is a remote position, but candidates must live in or near Dallas, TX, or Anchorage, AK, or be willing to relocate if offered a permanent position.

The program runs at least 90 days and is meant to give you private-sector experience in cybersecurity. The schedule is flexible to accommodate out-processing. Before you start, you must pass a background check and be approved for the program by a commanding officer.

What you will do

You will get business and technical exposure to core parts of the cybersecurity field, including:

  • Automating compliance audits
  • Responding to security events
  • Integrating security technologies across tools and platforms
  • Developing secure infrastructure to strengthen security operations and compliance management

You are also expected to take part in industry-related activities and customer meetings, and to write three 1,000-word articles or blogs on cybersecurity topics.

What they are looking for

They want someone who learns quickly, has a good attitude, and has a strong work ethic. To be considered, you must be currently serving in the United States military, be eligible for SkillBridge, and be seeking an associate, bachelor's, or master's degree in cybersecurity, computer engineering, or a related discipline. You also need exposure to core information security functions, including network and application vulnerability testing, role-based access control (RBAC), security information and event management, and/or computer incident management.

You must be proficient in systems/security engineering and networking, have at least two years of information technology experience, and have exposure to three or more of the following:

  • Debian or Fedora-based operating systems
  • Git, SDLC, and CICD processes
  • One or more scripting languages such as Bash or PowerShell
  • Network engineering, including routing, switching, and firewall fundamentals
  • Ingesting security and system logs from disparate sources and formats, such as SNMP or syslog
  • Managing and using REST-based APIs
  • A four-year degree from an accredited college or university

Preferred skills or experience

  • Fortinet firewall technologies
  • Database technologies such as OpenSearch and SQL
  • Ansible and Terraform
  • N8n and shuffle
  • Power BI and Monday
  • NIST SP 800-171, CMMC 2.0, or other regulatory standards (HIPAA, SOX, PCI-DSS, etc.)
  • OS architecture
  • Certifications such as CISSP, Security+, CEH, CISA, CISM, Fortinet NSE4, Microsoft, or other cybersecurity certifications
  • Cyber incident response
  • Kubernetes (Rook, CephFS, or kustomize is a bonus)
  • C and/or Python (M code is a big plus)

Equipment, training, and evaluation

Interns get a laptop, docking station, monitors, keyboard and mouse, camera, and headset for remote work. Most hands-on instruction and on-the-job training happen over Microsoft Teams, though there may also be opportunities to interact on-site. You need a home office environment and enough internet connectivity to work remotely.

Interns are expected to perform the skills described in the training with minimal assistance. Evaluations are given as either Satisfactory or Unsatisfactory.
