Software Engineer - Storage

Supabase is hiring a Software Engineer for Storage, its object storage service. You would work across the whole stack: client libraries, CLI, CDN, the storage server and the deployment infrastructure. The role is fully remote and open to candidates anywhere in the world.

Supabase describes Storage as one of its fastest growing services. The team's stated goal is to take the friction out of uploading, storing, processing and delivering assets, so developers don't have to think about regions, caching, codecs and security before they can upload anything.

What you will do

• Improve the analytics bucket offering and the storage of open file formats like iceberg and ducklake
• Work on asset optimization to speed up delivery for websites and mobile applications
• Build out the edge network to speed up uploads and add features like automatic cache invalidation
• Improve the performance, observability and reliability of the storage server
• Work with the frontend team on a fast, powerful storage explorer
• Improve APIs, client libraries and the CLI for an end-to-end developer experience
• Resolve escalated support issues and find and fix systemic problems across the platform

The work varies day to day. One example given is improving upload resilience in iOS applications; another is optimizing the S3 protocol for efficient retries or finding ways to speed up upload processing. You would contribute to the open source server and to upstream dependencies the team uses, such as the TUS server.

What they are looking for

• 5+ years of backend engineering experience running Node.js in production
• Experience with highly scalable, distributed systems
• Comfort working across the stack: backend application development plus some infrastructure work, including deploying, monitoring and scaling the service
• Familiarity with observability tools (OpenTelemetry, Prometheus, Grafana) and performance tuning
• Production-grade PostgreSQL experience, including tuning and troubleshooting
• An ownership mentality, driving projects end to end
• Empathy toward developer experience

Nice to have: prior work on developer tools; knowledge of cloud infrastructure (AWS, GCP or Azure) and containerization (Docker, Kubernetes); direct experience designing and operating large file upload and download pipelines at scale; practical CDN integration and optimization knowledge. Experience with image and video processing tools (sharp, dssim, ffmpeg) and formats and codecs (AVIF, WebM, Brotli) is a plus, as is experience with the frontend ecosystem (Next.js, React).
