ClickHouse Operations Engineer

PostHog is hiring a ClickHouse Operations Engineer to own the core piece of its infrastructure. Every PostHog product and customer relies on ClickHouse to ingest, store, and query data, and the company is growing toward capturing trillions of events per year. This role is for someone who has worked inside the internals of ClickHouse or another OLAP database and wants to automate and scale large clusters rather than just maintain them.

What you will do

• Automate, manage, and maintain ClickHouse as PostHog scales toward one of the world's largest clusters.
• Build systems and automations for provisioning and scaling ClickHouse clusters handling over 100 PB of data.
• Handle ClickHouse operations and scaling infrastructure, plus node and instance-level performance optimization.
• Make sure the right hardware is deployed at the right time for each workload.
• Investigate and experiment with the latest hardware cloud providers offer to find the optimal setup, with a budget to do it.
• Use Terraform, Ansible, and Kubernetes to automate dynamic instance provisioning.
• Work on a bleeding edge ClickHouse implementation, such as open format backed tables.
• Work on query performance tooling as PostHog builds a query optimizer for ClickHouse.

What they are looking for

• OLAP database experience. The role focuses on ClickHouse, but strong experience with other OLAP databases is welcome. They want people who have gone into the internals of these databases, not high-level users.
• Experience automating dynamic instance provisioning, with strong Terraform, Ansible, and Kubernetes skills.
• Experience with scale and complexity, from building and operating high-scale data storage solutions.
• Familiarity with the stack: Python, Terraform, Ansible, Kubernetes, AWS, and Zookeeper (an alternative to Zookeeper is fine).
