Engineering Manager, Platform Security

Discord is hiring an Engineering Manager to lead its Platform Security Engineering team. The team protects the systems Discord is built with, and the goal is to make the secure way the easy way. This role is for a manager who is comfortable writing a roadmap rather than following one, and who wants to own technically and socially complex work across engineering.

What you will do

You will shape company-wide security strategy and lead a highly autonomous, horizontally integrated team of software engineers. The team's work includes:

• Developing and applying secure baselines for cloud infrastructure, and owning the security of all cloud environments
• Managing infrastructure vulnerabilities while supporting an engineering org with hundreds of developers
• Securing first- and third-party software supply chains, from the dev environment through CI/CD and into production
• Building and operating identity and access management systems for humans and machines that are user-friendly and promote least privilege
• Consulting on risk assessments, architectural designs, threat models and code reviews, balancing security with other business considerations

The team designs and builds paved paths for managing identities and access, shipping code, configuring cloud infrastructure and operating services.

What they are looking for

• 3+ years as a people manager, having managed a team of 3+ security software engineers
• A passion for creating diverse and inclusive teams and for coaching engineers
• 3+ years of experience securing systems with millions of users
• Comfort writing the roadmap, not just following one
• Experience building in and securing cloud-based environments (Discord uses GCP, Cloudflare and AWS)
• Expert reasoning about the security of complex systems, even with unfamiliar components
• Experience writing software in a general-purpose programming language (Discord uses Python, Typescript and Rust)
• Experience developing with agentic AI, and a good grasp of AI security practices

Bonus points

• Understanding of modern authentication and authorization concepts such as RBAC, OAuth, Zero Trust network architectures and mTLS
• Familiarity with build and CI/CD technologies such as Terraform, Bazel, Buildkite and Spacelift
• Experience defining and orchestrating containers (Kubernetes, Docker, Distroless, OCI) and serverless workloads such as Cloudflare Workers
• Experience running and operationalizing security platforms such as Wiz

Location

This position is West Coast (U.S.) based and can be remote. If you live in the Bay Area, you are welcome to work from Discord's SF office.

Pay and benefits

The base salary range for this full-time position is $248,000 to $310,000 USD. The position is also eligible for equity and benefits. Salary ranges are determined by role and level, and individual pay within the range depends on job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. The listed figure is base salary only and does not include equity or benefits.
