Distributed Systems Engineer (L5) - Commerce Insights and Data Products Engineer at Netflix — remote job on CafeRemote

Netflix is hiring a Distributed Systems Engineer (L5) for its Commerce Insights and Data Products Engineering team. The team builds data that supports product experiences for current and future Netflix members, and this role works with data scientists and other engineers to build low-latency data products that power algorithms and machine learning models across commerce, identity flows, and other areas.

The job is for someone with an analytical mind and a strong engineering background who can build highly available, reliable distributed data systems and services. The work supports the timely delivery of high-quality data used in the Netflix product.

What you will do

  • Build low-latency data products that power algorithms and machine learning models running across commerce, identity flows, and more.
  • Partner closely with data scientists and other engineers.
  • Develop highly available and reliable distributed data systems and services.
  • Ensure timely delivery of high-quality data for use in the Netflix product.
  • Design multi-tenant systems that handle high-scale and high-throughput demands while being easy to operate, monitor, scale, and maintain 24x7.
  • Make data available for self-service and wider integration.
  • Craft scalable systems and solutions for a range of product and engineering goals.

What they are looking for

  • Proficiency in at least one major language on the JVM stack (for example Java or Scala) and SQL in any variant.
  • Elegant, maintainable code and comfort picking up new technologies.
  • A product mindset and curiosity about the business's needs.
  • A collaborative style for working with product management, data science, and engineering.
  • Strong data intuition and the ability to apply analytical skills and data engineering fundamentals to high-quality data products.
  • Experience building applications that use large-scale distributed systems, data processing frameworks for batch and real-time work (such as Spark or Flink), and storage solutions.
  • Understanding of how ML systems consume data, including features, inference inputs, labels, and reward signals, and the ability to use that knowledge to design low-latency, reliable data products that support personalized experiences.
  • Strong operational awareness and experience designing systems that are easy to operate, monitor, scale, and maintain around the clock.
  • A focus on observability, with monitoring, logging, and alerting built into designs for proactive issue detection and resolution.
  • Ownership of what you build beyond just your code, with a passion for quality.
  • Comfort working in agile environments with vague requirements, pivoting when needed, and taking smart risks.
  • Alignment with many aspects of Netflix's culture, including independent work, collaboration, and giving and receiving candid feedback.
