Full Stack Ruby Engineer Job | Work Remotely
OpenPlay Los Angeles, CA

OpenPlay is an enterprise software company that develops web applications for the music industry, working with record labels of all sizes. Founded in 2013, we’re a bootstrapped and growing business that collaborates with the largest U.S. distributors and numerous independent labels. Our flagship product, OpenPlay Music, supports thousands of users globally and continues to onboard hundreds of new clients annually.

We’re seeking Full Stack Ruby Engineers to join our talented team. This is a full-time position that can be fully remote (US-based only) or based in our Santa Monica, Los Angeles office. The starting salary is $100-155k, based on experience, with competitive benefits included.

Role Responsibilities

As a Full Stack Ruby Engineer, you’ll work closely with a team of 4–6 engineers and a designer to build, maintain, and improve our suite of web applications. Your role will include:

  • Collaborating on weekly planning sessions to set goals and prioritize tasks.
  • Developing features and writing code primarily in Ruby, with some HTML and JavaScript.
  • Writing integration tests using a single framework to ensure end-to-end functionality.
  • Reviewing and providing feedback on code through round-robin reviews.
  • Deploying code updates multiple times daily with automated processes.
  • Maintaining and improving existing code for scalability and performance.
  • Fixing bugs and troubleshooting as needed.

What You Won’t Do:

  • Estimate the scope of tasks. Work is broken into manageable chunks to maintain focus.
  • Report progress constantly; instead, focus on completing work and deploying solutions.
  • Attend stakeholder meetings; product managers handle stakeholder interactions so engineers can concentrate on development.

What We’re Looking For

We value experience and a commitment to writing clean, efficient, and maintainable code. Ideal candidates should have:

  • At least 2 years of full stack web development experience.
  • Proficiency with relational databases (PostgreSQL preferred) and concepts like indexing and normalization.
  • Experience writing Ruby in an MVC framework (Python/Django experience is acceptable if you’re willing to learn Ruby).
  • Familiarity with JavaScript for client-side functionality.
  • Strong understanding of writing and implementing tests for web applications.
  • An eye for best practices, focusing on maintainable and scalable solutions.

Technologies We Use

  • Backend: Ruby with frameworks like Sequel, Sinatra, and HAML.
  • Frontend: StimulusJS for dynamic behavior and server-driven logic.
  • Database: PostgreSQL with full-text search and filtering via Elasticsearch.
  • Other Tools: WebSockets, integration tests, and third-party APIs.
  • Cloud-based infrastructure with minimal in-house DevOps.

Benefits of Working at OpenPlay

  • Competitive Compensation: $100-155k starting salary, based on experience.
  • Comprehensive Insurance: Medical, dental, and vision coverage.
  • Flexible Work Environment: Remote-friendly with no set vacation limits.
  • Office Perks: Access to our Santa Monica office near the beach with free lunches at local restaurants.
  • Work-Life Balance: Low-pressure environment with minimal overtime expectations.
  • Tools and Growth: All resources, books, and tools needed to succeed in your role.

Time Zones Supported: EST (UTC -5), CST (UTC -6), MST (UTC -7), PST (UTC -8), AKST (UTC -9), HST (UTC -10).
 How to Apply

To apply, send us your resume and an optional cover letter. In your application, highlight:

  • Relevant experience in web application development.
  • Evidence of programming proficiency, such as a degree, code contributions, blog articles, or projects.
