Meridian: Full-Stack Engineer (Mid-level) at Spear AI — remote job on CafeRemote

Spear AI is hiring a mid-level full-stack engineer to build a data management and artificial intelligence platform for maritime domain awareness. The company makes sonobuoy sensors that collect data in the water and works with the U.S. Navy to collect and process SONAR data. This is a remote role in the United States on a small team where people take on a wide range of work.

You would join a defense contracting company that ships products deployed to U.S. submarines and integrated with the sonobuoys it manufactures. The team is remote and collaborates in real time on Slack or asynchronously through GitHub.

What you will do

  • Build out application components and pages.
  • Implement historical and real-time data feeds using WebGPU.
  • Design and develop data models using Postgres and Apache Iceberg.
  • Modify real-time data pipelines using MQTT and Redpanda.
  • Modify offline data pipelines using Dagster for batch processing.
  • Modify and integrate machine learning models or other algorithms into the application.
  • Improve local development and CI/CD using modern tooling and GitHub Actions.

What they are looking for

The team wants strong full-stack engineering skills and shares a set of working values. They look for someone who is fanatical about polish, keeps code linted, formatted, fully typed, and at 100% test coverage. They want someone who cares about correctness and takes pride in libraries and services downstream consumers trust. Performance matters to them, down to Lighthouse scores and query speed. They value engineers who dig deep, build prototypes, and set up experiments to understand how things work, and who stay current with upcoming platform features. They also want a great teacher who can break down a concept for a specific audience and get them excited about it.

Important skills

  • Expertise in TypeScript.
  • Expertise in CSS, such as TailwindCSS.
  • Experience with React and frontend frameworks such as Next.js.
  • Familiar with state management such as React Context.
  • Experience with Node.js, GraphQL, and REST APIs.
  • Proficiency with SQL/PostgreSQL.
  • Knowledge of Docker and Kubernetes.
  • Knowledge of Python.

Nice to have

  • Experience with IoT devices and sensors.
  • Digital signal processing experience.
  • Geospatial analysis and GIS experience.
  • Familiar with working in monorepos.

What they offer

  • Unlimited PTO and dedicated sick time.
  • Medical, dental, and vision coverage.
  • 11 paid holidays.
  • Professional development through educational opportunities and resources.
  • A flat organizational structure where you work directly with leadership.
  • 401(k) with company match.
  • Onsite, remote, flexible, or hybrid work arrangements, position dependent.
  • Relocation assistance, position dependent.
  • Referral bonuses and performance bonuses.
  • Life insurance and disability coverage.
  • Technology home office setup stipend.
  • Professional certification reimbursement, position dependent.

Pay and hours

Compensation is competitive and tailored to your experience, location, and impact. Spear AI says it is committed to equitable pay and will share a range aligned to your level and geography during the hiring process. In states such as CA, CO, WA, and NY, candidates will be provided a good-faith salary range upon request and throughout the hiring process. This is a full-time, exempt position under the Fair Labor Standards Act and is not eligible for overtime pay. Compensation is salaried and is not reduced based on hours worked.

About the company
