Horizon: Full-Stack Engineer (Senior) at Spear AI — remote job on CafeRemote

Spear AI is hiring a senior full-stack engineer to build a data management and artificial intelligence platform for maritime domain awareness. The company makes sonobuoy sensors that collect edge data in the water and works with the U.S. Navy to collect and process SONAR data. This is a remote role in the United States on a small team where people take on a wide range of work.

What you will do

  • Build out application components and pages.
  • Implement historical and real-time data feeds using WebGPU.
  • Design and develop data models using Postgres and Apache Iceberg.
  • Modify real-time data pipelines using MQTT and Redpanda.
  • Modify offline data pipelines using Dagster for batch processing.
  • Modify and integrate machine learning models or other algorithms into the application.
  • Improve local development and CI/CD using modern tooling and GitHub Actions.

What they are looking for

The team wants strong full-stack engineering skills and shared values. They describe the right person as someone who is fanatical about polish, making sure code is linted, formatted, fully typed, and has 100% test coverage. You care about correctness and take pride in downstream consumers trusting the libraries and services you build. You obsess over performance, including Lighthouse scores and query speed. You dive deep into how things work, building prototypes and setting up experiments. You live on the bleeding edge and keep a list of upcoming platform features you are excited about. You are also a great teacher who can break down a concept for a specific audience and get them excited about it.

Important skills

  • Expertise in TypeScript.
  • Expertise in CSS, such as TailwindCSS.
  • Experience with React and frontend frameworks such as Next.js.
  • Familiar with state management such as React Context.
  • Experience with Node.js, GraphQL, and REST APIs.
  • Proficiency with SQL/PostgreSQL.
  • Knowledge of Docker and Kubernetes.
  • Knowledge of Python.

Nice to have

  • Experience with IoT devices and sensors.
  • Digital signal processing experience.
  • Geospatial analysis and GIS experience.
  • Familiar with working in monorepos.

Why work with them

  • They ship, rather than working on 18-month projects that are irrelevant before they are finished.
  • The work has impact: products are deployed to U.S. submarines and integrate with the sonobuoys the company manufactures.
  • They are growing responsibly, with resources to hire more people but no desire to build a massive team of people who do not share their values.
  • They are remote. You can work from wherever you want, collaborating in real time on Slack or asynchronously via GitHub.
  • They are profitable and have investors who believe in them.
  • They care about doing great work, and you do not need permission to sweat the details.
  • They do not take themselves too seriously.

Pay, benefits, and hours

Compensation is competitive and tailored to your experience, location, and the impact you will make. The company says it is committed to equitable pay and will share a range aligned to your level and geography during the hiring process. In states such as CA, CO, WA, NY, and others where applicable, candidates will be provided a good-faith salary range upon request and throughout the hiring process. This is a full-time, exempt position under the Fair Labor Standards Act and is not eligible for overtime pay. Compensation is salaried and is not subject to reduction based on hours worked.

Benefits include unlimited PTO, dedicated sick time, medical, dental, and vision coverage, 11 paid holidays, professional development, and a collaborative environment with direct access to leadership. Additional benefits include a 401(k) with company match, onsite, remote, flexible, or hybrid work arrangements depending on the position, relocation assistance depending on the position, referral bonuses, performance bonuses, life insurance and disability coverage, a technology home office setup stipend, and professional certification reimbursement depending on the position.
