Role Overview
The New York Times is seeking an experienced Staff Design Technologist to contribute to the development of next-generation AI-powered products and platforms. This role is part of a company-wide initiative focused on integrating artificial intelligence into digital products to enhance how readers engage with news and information.
As a design technologist, you will help conceptualize, prototype, and develop innovative AI-driven experiences that support the organization’s mission of delivering meaningful journalism. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams including product designers, engineers, researchers, and editors to identify user challenges and design intelligent solutions.
Key Responsibilities
In this role, you will design and build high-fidelity prototypes of AI-powered features, experimenting with generative AI technologies and live AI APIs to explore new product experiences. You will collaborate with engineering teams to determine how AI infrastructure should integrate with client applications and ensure that these experiences align with modern mobile and digital UX standards.
You will also contribute to product strategy, participate in leadership discussions, and help identify opportunities where AI can improve how readers access and interact with news content. The role involves creating UX artifacts that evaluate editorial and user scenarios, helping teams design better experiences for subscribers.
Additionally, you will help develop design systems and standards, represent design work to internal leadership, and mentor junior team members to promote a collaborative and experimental design culture.
Required Qualifications
Candidates should have at least 7 years of experience as a design technologist, UX engineer, or similar role, with experience building coded prototypes and interactive interfaces for digital products. Strong expertise in interaction design, prototyping, and user experience design is essential.
Applicants should have experience working with AI-powered interfaces and large language models (LLMs), as well as collaborating with user research and data analysis teams to inform product decisions. Experience refining AI outputs such as tone, formatting, and behavior to align with brand and product goals is also important.
Preferred Qualifications
A strong interest in journalism and the future of digital information platforms is highly valued. Experience working in fast-moving product environments where requirements evolve frequently is also beneficial.
Work Environment and Compensation
This is a remote-friendly position. The role offers an annual salary range of $160,000 to $192,000 USD, depending on experience and qualifications.
