Software Engineers (Front-end & Back-end roles)

Zepto is hiring two Software Engineers, one focused on front-end and one on back-end, to work on its payments platform. Both roles report to an Engineering Manager and are open to candidates anywhere in Australia. Zepto is a remote-first company headquartered in Byron Bay.

What you will do

• Build and ship new software on a payments platform used by merchants and their customers
• Collaborate with peers and support your team
• Write, review and think about scalable, secure, accessible and optimised code
• Work with dedicated Security, Platform and Incident Management teams on a platform that is mission-critical to customers in a heavily regulated industry
• Provide technical insight to the customer support and onboarding teams
• Take part in an on-call rotation supporting mission-critical systems
• Help integrate AI tools into how the team works, including setup, documentation and cross-team alignment

What they are looking for

You have proven experience solving technical problems and a solutions-focused mindset. You are confident shipping code changes and have worked alongside other engineers to find scalable, maintainable solutions. You are comfortable in a busy, high-volume commercial environment, and your collaboration skills make you a valued team member.

You also advocate for AI adoption, embedding AI tools into daily work and keeping processes structured, documented and consistently followed.

Back-end Software Engineer

• Solid experience in a back-end language and API development. Ruby is the core stack and preferred, though not essential; strong fundamentals and a willingness to learn matter more.
• Some front-end development experience is a bonus.
• Experience building solutions with cloud-based technologies.
• Experience with test-driven development and continuous delivery, ideally in event-driven systems, microservice architectures and data streaming platforms.
• Able to be effective in a collaborative team environment.
• A solutions-focused lens on challenging situations.
• Ability to work productively in a fast-paced, agile environment.

Front-end Software Engineer

• Solid experience in a modern front-end language and framework. React and TypeScript are part of the stack and preferred, though not essential; strong fundamentals and a willingness to learn matter more.
• Familiarity with back-end-for-front-end patterns, and comfort reasoning about where logic and state should live across that boundary.
• Experience with Ruby on Rails and/or Golang is a bonus, with scope to grow more full-stack.
• Experience building responsive, accessible and performant user interfaces, ideally with an eye for UX and the ability to translate design into production-ready product.
• Experience integrating front-end applications with RESTful or event-driven APIs, and working with cloud-based technologies.
• Experience with test-driven development and continuous delivery, ideally in component-driven architectures and design systems at scale.
• Able to be effective in a collaborative team environment.
• Comfortable presenting options and trade-offs rather than waiting for a fully specified solution, and happy to own your code from design through to production.
