Data Engineer at VirtusLab — remote job on CafeRemote

VirtusLab is hiring a Data Engineer to help build a new data platform from the ground up. You will work on requirements and architecture, implement the solution, and stay involved in operations and maintenance after launch. The role is open to candidates in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

What you will do

You will take part in defining the requirements and architecture for the new platform, then implement it and remain involved in its operations and maintenance after launch. The work introduces data governance and management, laying the foundation for accurate reporting that was not possible before.

You will build data ingestion and processing pipelines, and collaborate with stakeholders to define requirements, develop data pipelines, and set data quality metrics. You will also follow and actively promote engineering best practices, data governance standards, and the use of open standards.

What they are looking for

Required skills:

  • Python (advanced)
  • Databricks or Snowflake (advanced)
  • Data engineering (advanced)
  • Strong communication skills for collaborating with stakeholders (advanced)
  • SQL (regular)
  • Azure, AWS, or GCP (regular)
  • Airflow or another orchestration tool (regular)

Nice to have:

  • dbt
  • Data modelling
  • LLM productivity tools such as Cursor or Claude Code
  • Knowledge of the insurance domain is considered a strong advantage

In general, they expect hands-on experience with Python and proven experience with data warehouse solutions such as BigQuery, Redshift, or Snowflake. They also want experience with Databricks or data lakehouse platforms, and a strong background in data modelling, data catalogue concepts, data formats, and data pipelines and ETL design, implementation, and maintenance.

You should be able to work in an Agile environment, collaborating with team members to solve complex problems with transparency. Experience with AWS, GCP, or Azure cloud services is expected, including GCS, S3, or ABS; EMR or Dataproc; MWAA or Composer, or Microsoft Fabric; and ADF or AWS Glue. They also want experience in ecosystems that need improvements and the drive to implement best practices as a long-term process.

Experience with Infrastructure as Code practices, particularly Terraform, is an advantage. A proactive approach matters. Familiarity with Spark is a plus, and familiarity with streaming tools is a plus.

The listing says not to worry about meeting all the requirements, and that passion and willingness to develop matter most. B2B does not have to be the only form of cooperation.
