Distributed Systems Engineer (L4) - Data Platform at Netflix — remote job on CafeRemote

Netflix is hiring distributed systems engineers for its Data Platform teams. The role is open to remote candidates anywhere in the United States, and the work centers on the infrastructure that moves and stores data across the company. You would join one of several teams, depending on where your background fits.

What you will do

The Data Platform teams build centralized platforms and tools that other Netflix business functions use to make data-driven decisions. The teams handle the heavy lifting so partners can work with data efficiently, securely, and responsibly. Depending on the team, your work could include:

  • Building core infrastructure for Netflix's online data stores and data movement systems, including a unified Schema Management Platform for Protobuf and Avro, a Fleet Management Platform for CI/CD and large stateful and stateless fleets, and control plane infrastructure for capacity, provisioning, and operations.
  • Working on security and access management through consistent authentication and authorization layers, plus resilience and reliability tooling such as SLI/SLO enablement and a fault management platform for large fleets.
  • Owning and operating Data Mesh and Data Bridge, the paved paths for real-time and batch data movement and transformation, on a system that runs thousands of pipelines and processes billions of records per second.
  • Developing and maintaining a managed key-value store, including a secure access layer for backing storage engines such as Cassandra, and contributing to the Cassandra open source community.
  • Improving the experience of data practitioners — data engineers, analytics engineers, ML engineers, and data scientists — by building tools that cut the friction of building and maintaining data products.

The teams also lead cross-functional initiatives and collaborate with engineers, product managers, and TPMs across the company, and they share work with open source communities and contribute to Netflix OSS.

What they are looking for

  • 2+ years of experience building large-scale distributed systems features or applications.
  • Proficiency in the design and development of RESTful web services.
  • Experience building and operating scalable, fault-tolerant, distributed systems.
  • Experience with Java or other object-oriented programming languages.
  • Comfort tackling multi-threading challenges.
  • A BS in Computer Science or a related field.

Netflix says it is committed to building a diverse and inclusive team and is open to remote candidates, valuing what you can do from anywhere in the U.S.

Pay and benefits

Compensation consists solely of an annual salary; there are no bonuses. Each year you choose how much of your compensation you want in salary versus stock options. Netflix determines your personal top-of-market compensation using market indicators and your job family, background, skills, and experience. The range for this role is $71,040.00 to $464,000.00, and it will vary based on location.

Benefits include health plans, mental health support, a 401(k) retirement plan with employer match, a stock option program, disability programs, health savings and flexible spending accounts, family-forming benefits, and life and serious injury benefits. Netflix also offers paid leave of absence programs. Full-time hourly employees accrue 35 days annually for paid time off for vacation, holidays, and sick leave. Full-time salaried employees are immediately entitled to flexible time off.

Other details

Netflix describes inclusion as a company value and aims to host a meaningful interview experience for all candidates. If you need an accommodation or adjustment for a disability or any other reason during the hiring process, you can send a request to your recruiting partner.
