Johns Hopkins University's IT@JH Univ Data Analytics & Engineering group is hiring a BI Administrator to run the day-to-day operations of its enterprise business intelligence platforms. The role covers Tableau Cloud, Power BI, and Microsoft Fabric as it is adopted, and it sits inside a matrixed administrative model where you work alongside partner BI administrators in other parts of the institution. This is a hands-on technical leadership job, not a purely strategic one: you configure, monitor, troubleshoot, and support the platforms yourself while also setting standards for access, compliance, documentation, and audit readiness.
What you will do
- Administer BI platform environments and services, including configuration, operational health monitoring, performance troubleshooting, and production support across Tableau Cloud, Power BI, and Fabric as adopted.
- Coordinate hybrid connectivity components such as gateways and bridges with central server management and infrastructure teams, and keep operational runbooks and telemetry current.
- Provide Tier 2/3 support for platform-level issues and coordinate escalations with vendor support, such as Microsoft support for Power BI.
- Implement BI platform governance guardrails covering workspace and capacity standards, lifecycle practices, and administrative processes, and take part in governance forums that review and approve changes.
- Develop technical and end-user-facing content, including knowledge base articles and admin guidance.
- Support licensing and cost recovery activities.
- Install and configure server hardware, operating systems, and infrastructure applications, and manage software and hardware solutions using best practices for the environment.
- Set up and oversee system backups and archive operations, and give direction to the technical team on recovery practices.
- Monitor and tune systems for performance, write scripts to automate systems management, and plan, schedule, test, and coordinate system software upgrades.
- Audit and maintain user access and authorization, and generate periodic reports on system performance, integrity, and capacity.
- Use monitoring tools and incident tracking systems to detect incidents, take corrective action, and find root cause.
- Design complex business, clinical, education, or infrastructure solutions by meeting with customers to understand their current processes and the problems around them, and document findings in writing and diagrams for clients and IT colleagues.
- Research, recommend, and implement new technologies based on their value to the institution, and work with vendors on products and processes.
- Lead technical systems analysis and design tasks for assigned environments and platforms.
- Follow change management policies on projects, lead RFP development, evaluate vendor proposals, and lead vendors, consultants, and internal enterprise groups in developing applications.
- Lead test planning, test scenario construction, and test sessions, and review test results and corrections.
- Author and maintain documentation written for the right audience, whether technical or end user.
- Participate in institutional and departmental committees and initiatives.
What they are looking for
The posting describes the duties above as typical examples of the work, and notes that not every responsibility will be assigned to every person in the position. The role involves leading and directing a technical team, reviewing their work against institutional standards, and assisting lower-level staff in using the system's technical software. You will need to work closely with M365, security, infrastructure, and governance stakeholders, and collaborate with BI administrators across other institutional areas to keep practices aligned and decisions coordinated for a broad customer base.
Pay and location
The salary range is USD 85,500 to 149,800 per year. The position is based in the United States.
