Software Engineer, Backend (Product) at Hex — remote job on CafeRemote

Hex is hiring a backend-leaning product engineer to work on its AI analytics platform. You would join a product team building features that let Hex's AI agent work across more customer segments and surfaces, including APIs, MCP, and command-line interfaces. This is a remote-first role open to candidates in the United States.

What you will do

Backend product engineers at Hex work on features across the whole application. The listing gives these examples of the kind of work involved:

  • Build and extend Hex's API and CLI so technical users can set up workflows that fit how they work
  • Design MCP server and client implementations to open new entry points into the platform's capabilities
  • Design and build a next-generation access control system, including role-based access control, admin request and approval flows, and tiered admin roles that hold up in complex organizations
  • Own full-stack product changes end to end, from backend policy enforcement through admin-facing workflows, keeping enterprise features intuitive, reliable, and secure
  • Propose and implement scalable systems together with the wider Hex team

What they are looking for

  • 5+ years of backend or full-stack software engineering experience
  • Skill at building systems with high complexity and intricate business logic
  • Deep interest or experience in agentic workflows that involve disparate systems and tools
  • Experience on a remote-first team, with strong written communication for that setting
  • Interest in technical collaboration through RFCs, code reviews, and architecture discussions
  • Hands-on familiarity with enterprise integrations: SSO, SCIM-based provisioning, audit logs, MFA, and delegated access
  • A strategic mindset that weighs business and product goals against engineering effort, including the tradeoff between user value and technical complexity
  • Willingness to make changes anywhere in the stack to drive impact

The stack

Hex is a web-based notebook and app authoring platform. The frontend uses TypeScript and React, with Apollo GraphQL and Redux handling application state and data. The backend is also TypeScript, running an Express/Apollo GraphQL server that works with Postgres, Redis, and Kubernetes to manage the database and Python kernels. The backend is tied closely to infrastructure and CI/CD, deployed and maintained with Terraform, Helm, and AWS.

Pay and benefits

The salary range for this role is $198,000 to $295,000 per year. Hex says the range may reflect factors such as geographical location and the skill levels it is open to. Placement in the range is decided after the interview process, taking into account room for growth, internal fairness and parity, demonstrated skills, and depth of experience. The recruiting team can share more during interviews.

Hex also lists equity, health benefits, and flexible paid time off as part of its total rewards package.

How applications are reviewed

Hex uses AI-assisted tools in its application review process, including for resume screening and fraud detection. The company says all AI-generated recommendations are reviewed by a member of its recruiting team before any hiring decision, and no application is rejected based solely on an AI tool's output. Submitting an application means consenting to the use of personal information under the Hex privacy policy.
