Java Back End Developer - Vice President

Citibank (Switzerland) AG is hiring a Java Back End Developer at the Vice President level in India. The role sits on a platform that serves hundreds of thousands of clients and millions of web requests a day, connecting internal and external users across existing applications. It is a hands-on technical leadership job for someone who has already led backend work on large enterprise systems and still writes code.

What you will do

• Set technical direction for backend development and influence architectural decisions and technology choices.
• Design, develop, and maintain backend services and APIs, including core components for user authentication, authorization, content routing, and data integration.
• Lead the definition and evolution of the backend architecture, keeping it scalable, secure, reliable, and maintainable in a federated system.
• Implement and enforce security measures such as single sign-on, centralized entitlements, and cyber defense standards across backend components.
• Improve backend speed and efficiency through caching strategies, asynchronous processing, and efficient data access patterns.
• Architect and build integrations that bring Content Provider applications into the unified platform over HTTPS interfaces.
• Mentor senior developers, run in-depth code reviews, and set standards for design patterns, testing, and operational work.
• Act as a subject matter expert on complex production issues, leading root cause analysis and resolution.
• Work with product management, front-end teams, architects, and infrastructure teams to turn business requirements into technical solutions and deliver features end to end.
• Assess risk in business decisions, follow applicable laws, rules, and regulations, and escalate and report control issues.

What they are looking for

• 8-12 years of backend software development experience, including significant work architecting and leading complex, large-scale enterprise platforms.
• Demonstrated experience as a Principal or Lead Developer, with both technical leadership and hands-on contribution.
• Expert-level Java skills and knowledge of associated frameworks.
• Practical experience with distributed systems, microservices architectures, and RESTful API design.
• Experience with identity and access management, including SSO protocols such as OAuth2 and OpenID Connect, and fine-grained authorization.
• Experience with cloud-native development, Docker, Kubernetes, and cloud adoption on GCP and AWS.
• Knowledge of relational and NoSQL databases.
• Strong problem-solving and analytical skills, including the ability to work through ambiguous problems.
• Communication and interpersonal skills strong enough to influence technical decisions and work across teams.
• Hands-on experience with Unix, Oracle, caching solutions, and AI adoption. Frontend integration knowledge is a plus: ReactJS, Content Security Policy, corporate design systems, and ADA compliance.

Education

A bachelor's degree, university degree, or equivalent experience. A master's degree is preferred.
